From Australia and New Zealand the aurora usually sits low in the sky as vertical beams rising from the horizon, not overhead curtains like you’ll see in northern-hemisphere photos, you’re much further from the pole here. Get away from town lights; even moderate light pollution will wash out anything but a strong storm.
